What is the Hakone Ekiden race?
The Hakone Ekiden is a famous Japanese relay race connecting Tokyo to Hakone, with over 100 years of history. It stretches over more than 200 km and takes place over two days.
Held annually on January 2 and 3, it is broadcast on Nippon TV, a major channel in Japan, and attracts nearly 30% of the national audience during the event.
The competition features 21 elite university teams. Among the most iconic, Aoyama Gakuin University has distinguished itself by winning the title several times, including a recent 7th victory.
